New for 2017: Choose your start time!

The Blue race will begin at 6am – shuttles leave at 5am.

The Red race will begin at 7am – shuttles leave at 6am.

You must choose your race at packet pickup on Friday, June 23.

Here are some things to keep in mind regarding the 5K Run/Walk:

1. Packet Pick-Up will be on Friday, June 23 from 10am-5pm near the Optometry Cares Kiosk in AOA Central. Waivers will be available for you to sign at Packet Pick-Up. If you are picking up for another participant, you must bring their signed waiver with you (Optometry Cares 5K participant waiver)

2. This year’s race will take place along the Virginia side of the Potomac River along the Mt. Vernon Trail (map at the bottom of the page). Because of the challenges finding a location that will allow our significant number of runners without impacting local residents who want to use the beautiful parks and trails, we have split our race up into two waves – a 6am start and a 7am start. This will ensure that the path along the river doesn’t get over crowded.

3. To fairly divide race registrants between the events, we will allow you to select your race start time when you pick up your packet on Friday, June 23. Time slots will be given out first come first serve, so if you have a strong preference for one time over the other please arrive early on Friday. Each time slot will be allowed a maximum of 150 participants. When you pick up your race packet, you will be given a number that corresponds to your start time.

4. Shuttle buses will transport you to the Starting Line. On Saturday morning, shuttle buses for the race will depart the Walter E. Washington Convention Center outside the L Street North Lobby. Buses for the 6am race (Blue) will begin departing at 5am. The last bus will depart by 5:15am. Do NOT be late, as the buses must leave in time to drop off the first group and come back for the second group. If you are running the 7am race (Red), your buses will depart the same location at the convention center at 6:00am with the last bus leaving by 6:15am.

5. We will have an award ceremony for the first race at 6:30am. After which, the buses will return the first group of runners to the Convention Center. We will have an award ceremony for the second race starting at 7:30am and afterward, the buses will return those participants to the Convention Center.

6. There will NOT be registration allowed on the day of the race (Saturday). Online registration closes on Monday, June 19 at noon (central time). If someone you know would still like to register, please come by the packet pickup table on Friday between 10am and 5pm.

7. Prepare for all types of weather!

8. There will be water and restrooms at near the start and finish line. If you need water through the race, please come prepared.

Everyone registered will receive a race packet, chip-timed bib, a 2017 race t-shirt…and people who complete the course on Saturday will receive a finishers medal!
