Blast from the Past

 Thursday, June 25, 2015, 3:00-4:30 p.m.

Issaquah Room–Sheraton

Come reminisce with fellow optometric history buffs at The Optometric Historical Society’s annual Blast from the Past event. Join us  for Dr. Lester Caplan’s presentation, “The Early Years of Optometry in the Indian Health Service.”  In 1968, the United States Public Health Service appointed Lester Caplan, OD, MEd, as the first Optometric Consultant to the Director of the Indian Health Service (IHS).  His charge was to educate administrators and clinicians throughout the IHS about optometry, develop and expand optometric utilization, improve relationships with private sector optometry, and develop a harmonious relationship with IHS ophthalmologists and ophthalmology consultants.  He will talk about his experiences over his 16 years as Consultant, the early difficulties he faced and the eventual attainment of his goal of having Optometry in the forefront of providing quality eye care to the Native American population. All attendees are encouraged to attend this important presentation.

Your investment will ensure that The AOA Foundation continues to provide immediate relief to those in need in the wake of natural disasters, vision care to needy Americans, scholarships for optometry students, preservation of optometry’s history and public education about the need for a lifetime of vision care.
